Arthur Fleischmann

Arthur Fleischmann (1896–1990), a native of Bratislava, was an internationally renowned sculptor whose professional career spanned more than 60 years. During his lifetime, he worked in various locations across four continents (Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia). This publication examines in greater detail the early period of this versatile artist’s career (the 1920s and 1930s), which is linked to Bratislava, where he exhibited regularly, and Vienna, where he lived and worked until his final departure from Central Europe in 1938.

It provides a wealth of new information on A. Fleischmann’s biography and, in particular, a comprehensive assessment of his work within a broader historical and art-historical context. In the form of a scholarly catalogue, it presents a complete collection of almost 70 of the artist’s works in Slovakia, held in three collecting institutions: the Bratislava City Museum, the Bratislava City Gallery, and the Slovak National Museum – Historical Museum.

The significance of this monograph lies primarily in the fact that it presents A. Fleischmann within the Slovak and Central European context as an artist who was born in the provincial, multilingual environment of Bratislava and later became a leading figure of international modernism. The manuscript fills a gap in Slovak research into 20th-century sculpture whilst also continuing the line of research devoted to artists of Central European origin working in exile.
