‘I WANTED MORE THAN JUST TO TORMENT MY SPIRIT WITH WORRIES ABOUT THE HOUSEHOLD.’ The Contexts of Hana Gregorová’s Life and Work

Who is Hana Gregorová to us? Do we see her as the first Slovak feminist, cultural organiser, writer and intellectual, or do we still view her primarily as the wife of Jozef Gregor Tajovský? Or does the name Hana Gregorová first bring to mind the well-known actress of the same name?

The exhibition *Hana*, which ran at the Bratislava City Museum from 22 November 2024 to 31 August 2025, contributed significantly to raising awareness of Hana Gregorová (1885–1958). It sparked a wave of interest in this exceptional figure of the first half of the 20th century and provided the impetus for the creation of this book. It offers a number of new insights into her life, written from various perspectives.

The book also includes eleven previously unpublished original texts by Hana Gregorová, which we are deliberately making available as a loose sequel to the now cult-status reader *Slovenka pri knihe*. Although Hana Gregorová’s life unfolded mainly in what is now Slovakia and the Czech Republic, her story has a universal dimension. It stands as a testament to female courage and commitment, and its significance continues to resonate strongly today.
