About the Museum

The Bratislava City Museum is the oldest functioning museum in Slovakia that keeps developing as a dynamic cultural and memory institution. Since 1868, the Museum has presented the history of Bratislava, its inhabitants and events that have shaped the life and identity of the city. Today, it is not only a place preserving the cultural heritage and studying history, but also a living part of Bratislava – an accessible site for meeting, education and pleasure of exploring new perspectives of both history and present.

In the centre of the Museum’s activities, there are extensive and rich collections comprising more than 120 000 items. They document the development of the city, everyday life of its population, crafts, trade, wine-growing and also cultural life across the centuries. The collections serve as the basis for research, exhibitions, books and the search for connections between the history and present.
