Art

It is a cross-sectional art-historical collection focusing on the documentation of the development of arts and crafts, industry, applied arts and fine arts from the 17th century up to the present, with an emphasis on the works of Bratislava origin. The collection is not limited in time – objects from the domain of applied arts and fine arts are acquired for it from the most ancient times to the present.

What does the collection document?

• Applied arts and crafts: the collection comprises objects produced by arts and crafts, industry and applied arts made of various materials, especially of clay, glass, precious and common metals and wood. The collection of furniture, including various interior accessories, is significant.

• Local fine art works: artworks capture Bratislava themes and looks of significant figures active in the city. Usually, these are the works of local artists who worked in Bratislava, especially in the 19th century and in the 1st half of the 20th century.

• Public space and architecture: an important set of objects consists of blacksmith and locksmith works as well as stonemason works from renovated budildings in the historical heart of Bratislava that document the looks of public spaces in the 18th and 19th centuries in particular.

Valuable items with supra-regional significance:

• a collection of West Slovak stoneware from the 18th – early 20th centuries representing all major centres of production,

• numerous and typologically diverse collection of clocks from the 17th–20th centuries, with a significant share of products of Bratislava origin,

• complete collection of original works by prominent Slovak artists from the applied arts field, mainly from the 1970s,

• a separate, systematically built collection of works by Bratislava-born sculptor Arthur Fleischmann, which is of Central European significance.
