Between Euphoria and Exhaustion: The Bratislava Club Scene of the 1990s

U.club, Garáže, Duna, Rock Fabrik, New Model Club, Propeller, Rádio Ragtime, Spojka, and Stoka. The book charts Bratislava’s alternative urban culture of the 1990s—music clubs, techno, festivals, fanzines, radio stations, and other places and phenomena that shaped an entire generation.

Peter Dolník, a music enthusiast and editor at Rádio_FM, explores the music scene in Bratislava in the 1990s and the environment in which its club scene took shape. The publication also offers a broader perspective on the city’s alternative culture—from cultural centers, record stores, and festivals to venues that weren’t strictly music clubs but played an important role in the scene.

Michal Čudrnák explores the phenomenon of Bratislava and Slovak techno; Roman Džambazovič situates club culture within the sociological context of subcultures and neo-tribes; and Zuzana Kepplová offers a feminist and queer perspective on the electronic club scene at the turn of the 1990s and 2000s.

The book is published in collaboration with N Press, s.r.o., on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name.
