History after 1945

This cross-sectional collection includes also collection items created from 1945 onwards, while its upper time limit is not set and is continually shifting. It was founded in 1961 as a collection focusing on documenting the construction under socialism, but currently it represents the “liveliest” collection of all BCM collections with the most significant potencial of growth. Its expansion and enhancing is a priority with an emphasis on documentation of the present (period after 1990).

What does the collection document?

• Political, economic, cultural and social life: complex development in the city, including partial military life (e. g. objects related to commemorating the liberation of the city by the Red Army prior to 1989).

• Promotion of the regime and personalities: a substantial part consists of objects associated with personalities of political and cultural life and its biggest part is related to the promotion of the regime in 1948–1989.

• Life in the city after the Velvet Revolution: it documents disappearing and closed production companies, cultural life of the city, public gatherings, marches and demonstrations.

• Elections and nation-wide events: the first parliamentary elections, local elections with the emphasis on the elections of the mayor, as well as recent events affecting Bratislava (e. g. COVID-19 pandemic or the hate murder next to Tepláreň bar).
