In the Service of Slovakia: A History of Archaeology during the First Czechoslovak Republic

This publication sheds light on the fascinating beginnings of professional archaeology in Slovakia in the 1920s and 1930s. Using the examples of prominent figures and field expeditions, it presents the establishment and activities of the State Archaeological Institute in Prague, the first generation of archaeologists and their pioneering research – from Devín Castle through the karst regions to the Roman settlement of Gerulata.

The book also explores the life and work of Professor Jan Eisner, the first full professor of archaeology at Comenius University, who had a significant influence on Slovak museology and heritage conservation.
