Modern History II

The core of this cross-sectional historical collection is limited by years 1848–1945. It also includes two specific sub-collections with a supra-regional overlap, which document the present as well.

What does the collection document?

• City administration and turning points: administration of the city, its symbols and ties to superior authorities in the period of Austro-Hungarian Empire and the 1st Czechoslovak Republic. It reflects the breaking events in Bratislava such as World War I and II, arrival of the Czechoslovak government to the city in 1919, military parades or holiday celebrations and unveiling of monuments.

• Economy and public space: industry, businesses, trade and gastronomy (especially cafes and public catering) as well as entertainment, social and cultural life and association movements in the city.

• Private life and families: effects of Bratislava families that reflect their lifestyle, education, professional activities, ethnicity, religion and public involvement.

Individual sub-collections with supra-regional significance:

• Secular textiles and toys: clothing culture and accessories from Bratislava workshops, salons and factories (from the end of the 18th century until the end of the 20th century) and the array of toys and children’s games and board games (from the 2nd half of the 19th century until the end of the 20th century).

• Everyday culture: a specialised set of objects documenting the private life, way of living and everyday life of Bratislava population over the course of two centuries (1800–2000).
