Numismatics collection

The specialised cross-sectional collection represents a classic, broadly designed numismatic collection focusing especially on European coins. The core of the collection was established in 1869 and its basis is created by the so-called old BCM collections. The time frame of the collection is extremely wide: it goes from the last third of the 2nd century BC until the present. Moreover, it is open to new acquisitions without any time limit.

What does the collection document?

• Development of currencies and medal-making: it maps the development of currencies and medal-making in Central Europe with a main focus on the territory of present-day Slovakia.

• Finds of coins: from 1927, the collection systematically includes collective as well as individual finds of coins originating from archaeological research.

• Securities and paper currency: the collection comprises banknotes, bonds and other securities dating back especially to the late 19th and the 1st half of the 20th centuries.

Valuable items with supra-regional significance:

• Celtic coins: the most important sets in the collections are represented by precious Celtic coins from the territory of the city of Bratislava,

• coronation medals: medals issued on the occasion of the famous coronations of Hungarian kings in the city,

• local mints and social life: mints and medals related to the city that document the acitivities of associations, companies or significant figures.
