Numismatics collection

This specialised cross-sectional collection represents a classic, broadly conceived numismatic collection focusing primarily on European currency. The core of the collection dates back to 1869 and is based on the so-called ‘old collections’ of the MMB. The collection covers an exceptionally broad time span: it ranges from the last third of the 2nd century BC to the present day, with new acquisitions being added without any time restrictions.

What does the collection document?

• The development of currency and medallic art: it charts the development of currency and medallic art in Central Europe, with a particular focus on the territory of present-day Slovakia.

• Coin finds: since 1927, both bulk and individual coin finds from archaeological excavations have been systematically incorporated into the collection.

• Securities and paper currency: the collection includes banknotes, securities and other documents of value, particularly from the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries.

Valuable objects of national and international significance:

• Celtic coins: the most significant items in the collection are rare Celtic coins from the Bratislava area.

• Coronation medals: medals issued to mark the famous coronations of Hungarian kings in the city.

• Local coinage and social life: coins and medals relating to the city, documenting the activities of associations, companies and prominent figures.
