Pharmacy collection

It is a specialised cross-sectional collection representing the largest collection of this kind in Slovakia. Its core was established prior to 1960, while most of the items were acquired in the 2nd half of the 20th century. The time span of the collection covers especially the 19th century and the 1st half of the 20th century (with overlaps with the earlier as well as later dating). The items documenting the development of pharmacy are included into this collection from the earliest times until present. Due to its nation-wide scope, it also comprises items originating from outside Bratislava.

What does the collection document?

• Pharmaceutical activities: it focuses mainly on material aspects of pharmacy and maps the historical development of pharmacy in all its scope.

• Local pharmacists: it contains valuable sets related to former pharmacies operating in Bratislava.

• Material artefacts: it documents the history of pharmacy by means of fragments of furniture from historical pharmacies, pharmaceutical equipment, art works and writings.

Valuable items with supra-regional significance:

• authentic furniture from the Red Crayfish Pharmacy shop, which is available for the public directly on site,

• a unique collection of vessels made of various materials designed for storage and preservation of drugs, which is of Slovak significance,

• preserved pharmacy signboards.
