Living Archaeology at Devín: Baking Bread from the Roman Era

Spend your Saturday afternoon at Devín Castle, which is celebrating the anniversary of a significant archaeological discovery—the find of a charred loaf of bread dating back to the Roman period. You can look forward to engaging lectures on bread, the history of fermentation, and medicinal herbs; an archaeological walk themed around the Migration Period; and an interactive program for children led by the historical military group S.C.E.A.R.

You’ll experience experimental baking, learn about Roman and Germanic cuisine of the time, and discover the lives of Roman legionnaires in military camps. There will also be a demonstration of period military training and a unique sourdough swap—share your favorite sourdough starter with others, and take home a starter from someone else’s kitchen.

Admission is permitted only with a valid ticket to Devín Castle.

The event's partners are the S.C.E.A.R. group, BROZ—a conservation association—and the Slovak Archaeological Society at the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
