What were the Štúr followers looking for at Devín?

How did Devín Castle become a symbol of collective memory, and why did it come to occupy such a significant place in the national narrative in the 19th century? Through experiential learning, work with historical and literary texts, and discussion, this educational programme explores the changing significance of Devín – from a strategic site to a symbol of national identity. Pupils reflect on the role of the Štúr generation and the process of shaping national consciousness, whilst critically considering how the meanings of historical sites emerge and change. The aim is to understand why specific locations become symbols.

Devín Castle is open all year round, in both the summer and winter seasons, every day except Mondays. The earliest admission is at 10.00 am. Educational programmes take place exclusively outdoors, so please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the current weather conditions. In the event of extremely adverse conditions, the programme may be cancelled or rescheduled in consultation with Devín Castle.
