Gerulata on the Borders of the Roman Empire
Ancient Gerulata
Duration of tour: 20min

Ancient Gerulata is a former Roman fort, an important military camp dating from a time when the area of present-day Bratislava formed part of the frontier of the Roman Empire. How did people live in the camp, which deities did they worship, how did they fight, and how did they spend their free time? The exhibition introduces you to the everyday working life of Roman soldiers, as well as the lives, social structure and activities of people living in the civilian settlement and the wider hinterland with its villas and rural settlements. You can explore the development of Gerulata over its first 400 years through archaeological finds from Roman burial grounds, inscriptions and stone artworks. The exhibition also features an interactive 3D model that takes you on a virtual tour of the camp as it looked in the 3rd and 4th centuries. Outside, you can see the surviving foundations of the Roman fort.
