J. N. Hummel Exhibition

A pupil of Mozart, a friend of Haydn and Goethe, and above all a piano virtuoso, Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778 – 1837) was born in Bratislava and ranks among the most important European composers of his time. The exhibition presents his life and work, a collection of musical instruments and examples of period sheet music. His compositional legacy includes around 300 works. Among the most valuable exhibits are the composer’s original pianos. One is said to have been played by Hummel while he was studying with Mozart, while a beautiful concert grand made by the prestigious Erard company is particularly sought after by musicologists and musicians. Even if classical music is not among your main interests, the Memorial House of J. N. Hummel is worth visiting for its architecture and the charming courtyard in which it is located.
